The high return-on-investment (ROI) potential is possible because of the unique design of the Express Bag System. Express Bags have special loops sewn on to their sides. Customers slip those loops onto special brackets on the Express Bag System carts and are then ready to begin shopping. Customers then place shopped items directly into Express Bags. Thus Express Bag System’s carts have no baskets making them less attractive to theft. This could save several hundred to thousands of dollars per store per month.
Since a hand-held scanner is used to ring purchases directly in the Express Bags, the labor and material intensive steps of basket unloading, conveyor handling, and disposable bag sacking are eliminated.
In recent tests, the Express Bag system demonstrated a one-third reduction in checkout time needed for a 55-item grocery purchase.
The Express Bags in the video are 100% Texas cotton, hand sewn domestically, and are very soft to the touch. Shoppers have commented on the harshness of the feel of some re-usable bags and so we chose cotton for the prototypes for their soft feel and durability. People have said they feel more inclined to want to hold, carry or handle these soft cotton bags.
Express Bags can display a sponsor’s advertisement and/or discount offer on its four sides. It can also be equipped with a scan-able tag we refer to as a Flex Coupon. The Flex Scan Coupon can be setup to trigger a discount on a bag sponsor’s qualifying product when a customer presents that sponsor’s specially marked Express Bag at checkout.
Flex Scan Coupons offer a great opportunity to encourage customer loyalty, particularly on store/house brands. It also offers an entirely different value proposition to customers than other re-usable bags. While other bags simply cost a couple of dollars and save the need for the use of disposable bags, Express Bags with the Flex Scan Coupon can offer the customer an opportunity to purchase a re-usable bag and then save over repeated purchases in subsequent trips to the store. Because they are made from durable soft cotton, they can really last to provide discounts week after week. To that customer, Express Bag does not have a costs, it has a value or return on investment (ROI) to offer.
It is estimated that a plastic disposable grocery bag goes to a landfill each week for every man woman and child in this country. As you know, there is growing awareness of the environmental impact of the release of plastic bags in lakes, oceans and streams.
Plastic bags are now banned or being phased out in major U.S. cities. Texas has pending legislation to tax the use of these plastic bags. A Canadian grocery chain is initiating a “Pay for Plastic Program” which charges customers 5-cents for each plastic bag needed to carry out their groceries.
Their decision was based on research that indicated customers were willing to accept the 5-cent charge as a gentle nudge or reminder to use re-usable bags.
